Web Hosting Companies - Look Before You Leap

Of course you do know! That - Web hosting companies are in the business of providing space, bandwidth and the internet connection of their servers to small internet business. Larger corporations may have their own network infrastructure and therefore in most cases do not require these services. But for most of us who want a piece of the web, I guess we have no choice but instead to "rent" web hosting for our sites.
Hosting plans vary widely. There are some which are free; and others which charge as much as $100 and up each month. There are those who offer a very small amount of disk space on their servers and very little bandwidth. Some offer a full complement of services including backup services, administration, design help and much more. In short the choices presented to you by web hosting companies can vary as much as you can possibly think of.
Web hosting companies often provide a choice of shared or dedicated hosting, shared hosting means that you will share server space with other sites, starting anywhere from a few to a few thousand other sites. This lets the web hosting firm to keep its overhead low. A lot of sites are simple enough not to require anything more than this. However, if your site is one which plans to grow, dedicated hosting is something you may want to consider.
As you may have guessed from its name, a dedicated server is one which hosts only one website or domain name. You can put as many sites as you want on this server and you have control and access to the server. If you choose to do so, you may also take over the administration duties of the server. This can save money on the cost of hiring an administrator, but can also take up a lot of your time. Unless you are an expert, you may want to leave the administration to the pros like me...(just playing)
Even thought some web hosting companies promise to provide a little help to help you manage and administer your dedicated server, you'll need a little expertise of your own in order to take care of administration and technical side of managing a dedicated server. You should at the least be aware of how to use FTP, set up email accounts, perform backups and some other common tasks.
If your site is growing rapidly in size and complexity, it may be a good idea to start using a database to keep track of all of the information on your site. This requires even more expertise, both technical and creative. Setting up a database can be fairly simple. However, designing a database which will meet your needs and provide good performance will require careful advance planning. Not everyone is cut out for database development, especially those who are more artistically minded. Of course, not everyone possesses the temperament for any sort of website duties, count me out!
There are plenty of other administrative tasks which need to be done as well. These include maintaining domain names, handling registration, managing disk space and a lot of other duties which are not really to the taste of many people. In order to tackle this work, you will need a basic understanding of the workings of the internet, including knowing how DNS operates. This provides a solid background in how these tasks fit into the broader picture of website administration.
When you are looking for good web hosting companies to get your website going, give consideration to all of these factors and determine what your capabilities and willingness are with regards to the work of administering the site. Be sure to investigate all possibilities, benefits and features of most Web hosting companies before you sign on to any web hosting company.

How To Decide Between Free Web Hosting And Paid Web Hosting For Your Blog

There are many choices for web hosting companies available and for blogging there are many free choices offered as well. The question that comes to mind to me is, "Is free webhosting cheap?" What I mean by that is what is it going to cost me in terms of functionality and accessibility. Let's take a look at some of the comparisons between free web hosting and paid web hosting.

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last couple of years then you know that blogging has become a formidable force on the internet and has allowed many people to get an online presence that may otherwise have been unable to do so. Many of these people are making their living by blogging and some like Jason Calcanis have become wealthy from it. Jason built a network of blogs over about eighteen months and sold them to AOL for nearly $30 million! That's a pretty good ROI. Anyway, I digress, back to our discussion on web hosting.

If you have decided that you want to operate a blog your next choice will probably be what blogging platform or software you want to use to accomplish you blogging. Relax, it's easy. Most of the blogging software out there today is open source which means it's, you guessed it, free! In this instance free is not a bad thing, I use Wordpress almost exclusively, it is free and has more options that I care to learn or use. There are other blogging software options available, but I won't go into them here because this article is about web hosting.

As far as web hosting for your blog you can choose free web hosting or paid so let's take a closer look at our choices. First off, you can choose Blogger which is owned by Google. Blogger is a good program especially for beginning bloggers because it is easy to use, it is web based, and the price is right. It's free. With that said however, if your intention is to blog professionally and possibly run a large number of blogs with automated content then Blogger is not for you. I have seen Google shut down many blogs because they considered them to be spam. If you want control over your own destiny then you want to use paid web hosting and have your blogs on your own server, or at least a shared server.

Still in the realm of free web hosting you also have a fairly new option from Wordpress who now offers a free web hosting for Wordpress blogs at their .com site as opposed to the .org site where you get the software and plug ins. The problem is that like Google, they are very restrictive with what you can put on your blogs and how you update them.

Another big issue with free web hosting is that you will usually have to display advertising of some sort which "pays" for your web hosting. This is great for the web hosting companies because it gives them tons of virtual real estate out there with their name on it, not so great for you. If you are blogging professionally, and if you are trying to make money for it then you are blogging professionally, you do not want any distractions on your site that leads visitors away from your site unless you are being paid for it like you do when someone clicks on an Adsense ad or affiliate banner.

My recommendation is that you pay for your own hosting because it gives you a wealth of choices, much more storage space, and takes almost all restrictions off of you within reason. There are still some web hosting companies that will not allow you to host gambling or porno blogs but other than that you are pretty open. Paid web hosting is not that expensive. You can get an account that will host as many blogs as most people will want to deal with a few bucks a month. So for the cost of a domain name and your hosting you will probably be around $100 a year. That is a pretty cheap investment for something that enables you to plug into all the ways of earning money on the net.

The best operation system for a WordPress blog hosting is Linux, which is cheap, reliable and also very fast. You have no need to pay more to host your blog in an Windows environment.

It would be good to find a web hosting company which can promise you with 99.9% up time. No matter you blog for personal interests or business, a reliable blog hosting is always very important to you.

Web Hosting – Strategies for a Successful Website!

Getting a website on the internet is as important as making one. To make a website live, you need to take the right steps and it becomes even more vital when a web owner is new to the industry. In such cases, it is always suitable to get the right website hosting result which is on offer, from many web hosting companies. There are few factors that can be helpful in choosing the right web hosting company. As a beginner, there should be certain methods to be applied when making that tough call on the web hosting service provider. It is always good to chalk out your requirements before starting your hunt for a hosting solution.

The first and the foremost concern of any web owner is the cost of getting the site live. There are a number of companies which offer good web hosting services at an affordable rate, which can prove really beneficial. There are companies that provide shared as well as dedicated servers depending upon a web owner’s choice. Shared web hosting gets the upper hand when the funds are limited or the business is small.

Once a hosting service provider is found who matches all the technical specifications such as FrontPage, DreamWeaver, Flash, Email, Autoresponders, POP3, Mail Forwarders, SMTP, IMAP, PHP, Perl, CGI-BIN access, Cron Jobs as well the funds, the next part is to do a check on customer feedback to see how reliable the provider is. Most of the information on uptime, technical assistance of the web hosting company is easily available on major search engines like Google and Yahoo. Choose a company that provides 24/7 technical assistance because it will be required once the website goes public.

Disk space, bandwidth and uptime are as important as any other technical feature. Disk space and bandwidth should be of good amount and there should be an option of increasing the bandwidth as per the demand of a web owner. Any company providing all these specifications is indeed a good deal for any starter. At the end of the day being a website owner you should be satisfied with the services provided by your web hosting services provider – whether you are getting all you need to grow, expand and sustain your business venture.

Alasdair Lumsden, Technical Director at EverCity explained, ”We take uptime very seriously and this is the next logical step to ensuring that no matter what our clients servers and platforms stay online. A lot of our clients host high profile campaigns and social networking sites for very prominent brands so we take our responsibility very seriously.”

The company has made the decision to relocate its services into managed environments, in response to the increasing importance and demand for 100% uptime. The company believes that keeping online marketing campaigns and ecommerce operations online with 100% uptime, is now more important than ever, since downtime costs online shops a sizeable amount of revenue and brand reputation loss.

While a number of hosting providers either do not offer this service or charge a premium for it EveryCity will be including it as part of their standard offering for both new and existing clients.

Yes, you can upgrade at any time. There's a $25 upgrade fee to reconfigure your account. We will also give you any hosting credit left over from your previous account toward your new account.

Will I be able to access my domain name with or without the www?

Yes, if your website is hosted by DeafVision you will be able to access your domain name with or without the www in front. For example, you could access the domain name "any-name.com" by going to http://www.any-name.com as well as http://any-name.com". Many web hosting companies do not offer this feature. For example, try the website of City College of San Francisco. Go to http://ccsf.edu (the site does not come up). Now add the "www" in front - http://www.ccsf.edu. This is an example of a website that only works with the "www" in the URL. With DeafVision your domain will work both ways

What is a virtual hosting account?

We specialize in virtual hosting which means that you can find a home for your website on our web servers and establish a presence on the Internet. We can help register your own domain name which will become your unique address on the World Wide Web. Having your own domain name does not reveal that you are renting web space, and, since email can be addressed to your domain (eg. www.any-name.com) you will not have to announce a new email address if you change internet providers. And, with a domain name you can transfer your web presence at any time and never lose your identity since you can take your www.any-name.com with you

Web Hosting Service For Your Game Server

Hosting game servers is emerging to be one of the most lucrative branches of specialized hosting services. Many hosting services are more than willing to provide room for game servers in order to make a hefty profit out of it. But while selecting a web-hosting service for game server one must be extra choosy. This is because game server hosting is much more demanding than other web hosting services.

First of all the game sites are one of the most frequently visited by net users. At any given time millions of users are latching on a single popular game site. Resultantly there is bound to be an unusually huge rush of traffick. Thus, the capacities of a service to handle traffick load should be gauged before selecting it for hosting a game server.

Otherwise one could find himself among total chaos and will have to confront with heavy loss. The must-haves for a game service provider is a control panel either cPanel or Plesk .A control panel solutions which is specially designed to automate and
standardize game server hosting process is another requisite for a game hosting service. A game service provider without these basic tools is no less than paralyzed.
Although these control panels perform a specific function they can as well use other soft wares, whether Linux or Windows.

These can also install game specific soft wares and an also send patches of soft wares to end users. One must be aware of the pricing systems of game service providers. It is a vital factor that may affect the decision-making while choosing a service provider for game servers. A game service provider must contain nodes which are simply put, separate spaces for allocating different games.

Each node should be assigned to host a specific game and supports a number of slots. The slots are the number of simultaneous connections of users who are connected to a particular node at a given time. The pricing system is based on the number of slots.

Thus while negotiating with a service provider it would be a good idea to be totally aware of the rates of different games. The cost per month for a certain game would be its rate multiplied by the average number of slots or the number of players connected to a certain node or server. Therefore one must keep track of the latest games hich are topping the popularity charts and avoid the ones which are on the verge of being obsolete.Compared to a shared web host machine, which can take in thousands of customers in a machine, a game host provider can accommodate only 0 to 15 nodes.

This accounts for a high amount of current consumption. It would be a safe ploy to ascertain whether a web host service provider is up to it before making a decision. Moreover if one is looking to package a game server with certain added features he should target the hosting services which provide dd ones like in game chatting apart from basic hosting acilities.Rate this Article:

A Guide to Choosing Small Business Web Hosting

With so many options in web hosting and the fierce competition that takes place between hosting companies, it is easy for small businesses to find reliable and affordable web hosting. There are many things to consider when choosing a when host for your website, and you should compare the services of at least a few hosting companies before choosing one.
Before you start looking at hosting companies, decide what your business needs. Will your small business website require dedicated hosting because it will require large amounts of bandwidth, storage space, and get a lot, 10,000 or more, visitors per day? Or, will shared hosting fit your needs if your website does not require as much space?
You should also consider what type of features your website needs, it is purely informational or will you need to integrate order forms, shopping carts, and payment options? Some hosts make it easy for you to set up an ecommerce website and others do not, the type of hosting you will need is be determined by the features your website will possess.
If you are not a web designer by trade and cannot afford to hire one for your website you will also need to consider how easy it will be to set up your website and how much knowledge of scripting, HTML, and file transfer you will need to set up your website. Some hosts offer website building packages with their hosting which makes it relatively easy to create a website without too much technical knowledge but you will end up paying a little more and loose some functionality.
It is possible to find hosting for your small business for as little as a few dollars a month for shared server hosting or as much as a few thousand dollars a month for a dedicated server. Once you know how much bandwidth, storage, and space you need and determine which hosting solution, shared or dedicated is best for your small business, you can then evaluate the different features of various hosting companies, including price, to determine which is best for you. You will want to look at factors such as uptime, technical support, cancellation, upgrade and transfer policies, as well as how long the host has been in business and any complaints or awards they may have in the community.
Uptime is related to reliability and will tell you how often you can expect your website to be unavailable to web surfers due to hosting technical issues. Most hosting companies that have good uptimes will advertise this; some of the major hosting companies advertise 99% uptime however no matter how reliable a host is if you run a website for long enough you will encounter at least a few technical glitches from your hosts end.
You should also consider the amount of technical support you will receive from a host and make sure you choose one that will fit your level of expertise. If you know you will need help make sure you pick a host with good tech support. Take a good look at their policies as well to make sure you will be happy if you decide to cancel, transfer your site, or upgrade your hosting plan.

Business Web Hosting-Five Keys to Choosing a Web Hosting Company

When you are looking into business web hosting, there are a slew of companies you can work with. This article will give you the five main keys you should think about when choosing a web hosting company.
The first key for a business web hosting company is to look into the amount of disk space that you will use. How much space will your website take up? This would consist of all files, pictures, graphics, and other animation which you will need to upload to the web hosting companys server. This can differ from company to company.
How is traffic on your website and how is your website used? If you have a lot of graphics and a lot of visitors, you will need greater bandwidth for your website than if you have a tiny trickle of visitors to your website. Here is an example: if you have a web site with one page that has 110 kilobytes with two pictures of equal twenty kilobytes size, one hundred fifty kilobytes per page is transferred any time a visitor to your web site clicks on this one particular page. If one thousand people visit your website in a given month, that will equal one hundred fifty megabytes of data transferred during the month from this one particular page. You can get a similar figure by looking at traffic patterns from your other pages traffic patterns. You will want to see how much you are charged for bandwidth and if there is a particular amount per month.
The third key is what kind of needs your website will have. You will need to see if the web hosting company you are considering can support different languages such as PHP and whether databases are supported as well.
The fourth key is if you want to be active in changing your website. Some web hosting companies will make the changes for you while others you have to handle it yourself. How active do you want in making the changes to your website and do you want to wait on others?
The final key when looking at business web hosting companies is what kind of support you will receive. Most web hosting companies servers never go offline but if they do, how quickly will they be back up and running? If your website is not loading correctly, is there a number you can call to get your website back up? You are losing visitors to your website for every period of time that your website cannot run correctly. This should give you an idea of particular keys you can look for in a business web hosting company.

When it comes to selecting hosts, websites generally rush to adult web-hosting services. At first glance this may appear weird but there are some practical and sound logic behind this popular trend.
Non adult websites are constantly on the lookout of a hosting service with high degree of efficiency. The capacity to provide ample room for heavy bandwidth consumptions and traffic loads are the main reasons behind preferring the adult web-host services over others.
The adult web-host services are tailor-made to fulfill the requirements of the websites with high traffic rates.
Websites require high connectivity speed and instant availability. For this they usually bank on adult web-hosting services. The adult hosting services constantly meet the steep challenges of porn websites, which is usually most frequently visited by net users. For this, they have their own well-equipped machinery.
Thus they are adept at delivering the goods when it comes to handling high traffic rates. This high efficiency rate of adult web hosting services turn out to be extremely lucrative for the non adult websites. So, not surprisingly these websites are constantly in a rat race with each other to occupy spaces in the adult web hosting services.
The adult web-host services have to maintain high degree of expertise in the field of engineering to come up with consistent and commendable performances. Constant upgrading of the important features like-optical career links to internet and key equipments such as routes, switches or hubs contribute to the high efficiency rate of adult web-host services.Another aspect that places the adult web-hosts above the normal host services is that the former deliver much improved facilities and services in the fields of server uptime, server availability. Moreover they provide a much smoother and easier path to the server. The adult web host services provide optimum security to the non adult websites. There is always an element of concern attached while choosing these web host services. There are chances that the bandwidths used specifically by porn websites may also be used by other websites accidentally which could spell doom for the latter. But the adult web host services are designed so as to protect the websites from such unwanted incidents.
In addition to these, another important characteristic of adult web-host services is that it has not confined itself to closed source systems. They also provide services in open systems such as Linux or Free BSD thus expanding their field of operations.
Moreover, the non-adult websites get some additional advantages when they choose adult web-host services over others. Custom solutions are a function which falls within the domains of the latter. This provides different websites with a rich resource of e-commerce and video solutions.
Thus, overall it can be assessed that adult web-host services are a lucrative option for the non-adult websites from all angles-be it high connectivity, handling intense flow of traffic. Add to that the safety factor and adult web hosting certainly looks an apt choice for non adult websites.

HostingCon 2008 is the only conference and tradeshow, focused exclusively on the hosting industry. As companies and individuals continue to expand usage of hosting services and hosted applications, hosting providers have new opportunities to provide valuable services to customers.

George A. Roberts IV, Executive Director of HostingCon 2008 noted, ”HostingCon 2008 will be a great place to learn about how cloud services will impact your hosted services business and how you can take advantage of those trends. ”The emergence of the Web as a business and consumer platform presents many new possibilities for the hosting industry, as well as a new set of challenges. Mr. Rogers spends his time talking to the industry about the choice between on-premise software and cloud services, and the important factors to consider when determining and investing in models for software and services.Mr. Rogers explained,
”Hosting providers are contemplating the challenges and opportunities cloud computing represents. At HostingCon 2008, I look forward to sharing the exciting technology developments taking place, and initiating a dialogue about the potential concerns and opportunities for hosting service providers.”In addition to Mr. Rogers’ keynote address, HostingCon 2008’s conference program will contain a number of sessions discussing cloud computing and its impact on hosted services providers.

Web Hosting ISP, Earthlink’s New Edge Networks, Upgrades DSL-Based MPLS

The service, planned to be sold through selected communications network providers, was revealed during the NXTcomm08 conference and expo in Las Vegas.

Greg Griffiths, Vice President of marketing for New Edge noted, ”Making our MPLS over DSL service available through strategic carriers greatly expands our sales growth opportunities. MPLS over DSL helps provide improved network service to business customers and stimulates increased use of bandwidth that will lead to service provider growth.”

New Edge indicates that its decision to provide its telecom industry-first service through certain carriers is in response to these providers interest to include Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) class of service over DSL in their programs to customers. New Edge is evaluating strategic partnerships based on sales volume commitments, distribution models and market focus.
Utilizing New Edge’s platform allows service providers to avert capital outlays for network infrastructure as well as costly product development delays and expenses. Interested carriers say offering MPLS over DSL powered by New Edge will help them attract and retain customers. Business customers can use the service to gain three principal benefits:Mix and match access technologies (DSL, T1, private lines) to meet the needs of each location without compromising the key values of MPLS networks: data traffic prioritization with classes of services and any-to-many communications;
Accelerate deployment of additional applications over less expensive DSL-based networks without the risk of creating network bottlenecks that compromise overall network performance;Set up affordable DSL networks as backup for primary MPLS T1 networks in the event of network disasters or outages while retaining true MPLS classes of service tags on data traffic in the switchover.

Until New Edge recently launched its MPLS over DSL service, data traffic tagging and prioritization with true classes of service were only available on more costly T1 lines with MPLS, short for Multi-Protocol Label Switching.Industry analysts hailed New Edge’s MPLS over DSL as an important service introduction that fills the large gap between DSL and T1 pricing. The service includes bandwidth optimization with up to five classes of service over DSL access, improved service level guarantees, and a Cisco router upgrade. To introduce MPLS over DSL, New Edge installed carrier-class gateway switches at various regional aggregation points around the country. The multi-million-dollar network infrastructure investment also helps New Edge expand network capacity, improve service and add traffic routing diversity.New Edge Networks is a wholly owned subsidiary of EarthLink Inc. (NASDQ: ELNK). New Edge Networks builds and manages private networks for businesses and communications providers. Through its nationwide backbone network with almost 900 switches and Internet routers, New Edge Networks uses any blend of network and access technologies (MPLS, frame relay, ATM, xDSL, cable, wireless, and satellite) for providing high-speed connections at any business address in the United States. Network options include any combination of access, network management functions, and on-site installation services.

Web Hosting Provider, LeaseWeb, Supports Twenga Business Network

Twenga chose hosting by LeaseWeb, in order to initially obtain all of the product data from e-commerce websites indexed, since the company needs more than 100 dedicated servers. LeaseWeb has installed the dedicated servers at EvoSwitch, the CO2-neutral datacenter. Expanding rapidly internationally, Twenga chose The Netherlands for its hosting provider.

LeaseWeb provides a Linux-based dedicated hosting solution to Twenga, which uses the sizeable LeaseWeb hosting network (with a current capacity of 210 Gbps). The rapidly growing solution initially uses over 100 servers divided over several 19-inch racks at EvoSwitch, the CO2-neutral datacenter.

The hosting solution’s design was developed by Twenga’s engineers in collaboration with LeaseWeb’s engineers. The heavy crawl technology will require even more hardware capacity in the near future.

The company has explained, ”A good shopping search engine that displays accurate results with the right products and prices needs a lot of capacity. Right now the TwengaBot uses about 100 servers, which together scan some 100 million web pages per day. But the LeaseWeb engineers will have to add new servers for us every day. I even expect that within just two years we will need to have more than 500 servers in place at the datacenter.”Recently, LeaseWeb was selected by new multilingual Internet platform for live broadcasting, zaplive.tv, for its international hosting network.Because of the size of the Dutch hosting provider LeaseWeb, the zaplive.tv went live in April 2008. Everyone can easily make his own programme or even his own web-tv via the portal, all for free.

Companies, institutions and private persons can stream concerts, parties, reports on hobbies or sport events, even press conferences, only using a webcam or camera and a computer with Internet connection. zaplive.tv not only is live but also interactive. Users can communicate via live chat and rate single broadcasts as well as commenting on them.

As an Internet start-up, zaplive.tv hopes to generate enough Internet traffic to attract advertisers within a year. Christian Steiger, Technical Director and Co-Founder of zaplive.tv explained, ”Our earning model depends on the Internet traffic we generate. And it started off well. We had a lot of interest from viewers in the first weeks. One point surely was our programme including performances of top ten bands. We had the finals of German premier league basketball and real Hollywood stars on the red carpet. And one user was streaming live from one of the biggest electronic parties in Germany with DJ-Sets from some of the world’s best DJs.”

zaplive is a multilingual portal for live streaming, based in Germany. Companies, institutions and private persons can use the streaming platform for a live and global broadcast of their events, such as concerts, parties, hobby reports, sport reports or press conferences. Users only need a camcorder or webcam and computer with Internet connection. The streaming technology, on which the platform is based, ensures that the live images can be displayed via the Internet. zaplive started in April 2008 after four months of hard work to take the platform into production.

The Planet Dedicated Server Web Hosting Firm, Commences Data Center Expansion?

Jeff Lowenberg, Vice President of Facilities at The Planet noted, ”As energy costs continue to climb, operating our data centers at peak performance is absolutely critical, both to our company and to our customers. Our goal is to use best practices and a practical approach to optimize our operations.”
Bringing The Planet’s total data center footprint to 167,000 square feet, the company expects the new data center to open in November. The company operates six data centers, with four located in Dallas and two in Houston. The new space will feature an enhanced energy-efficient design that utilizes improved measures to completely separate hot and cold air. The company expects to improve the data center ‘coefficient of efficiency’ to approximately 1.5. The coefficient of efficiency is an EPA- and Uptime Institute-recognized measurement of the total power necessary to operate a data center divided by its critical power, which is the energy required to operate its computers. An ‘ideal’ ranking is 1.6.
The enhanced energy-efficient measures include extending the returns of the computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units through the ceiling and utilizing the space above the ceiling as a return air path. By using CPI (Chatsworth Products Inc.) ducted exhaust cabinets in the new phase, The Planet is taking the next steps beyond traditional ‘hot aisle-cold aisle’ setups to completely isolate the hot and cold air in the data center.
Ultimately, The Planet endeavors to provide the following:

High level of network capacity and speed to deliver peak performanceInstant scalability to handle even the largest spikes in network trafficParallel, redundant, multi-tiered network routing and switching architecture to assure reliability and stabilityMultiple layer network security that prevents Delayed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks from harming businessesKnowledgeable experts with a passion for excellence and a commitment to operate the best networks in the business
